Pupillary Distance (PD) Measurement Guide

What is Pupillary Distance?

Pupillary Distance (PD) is the measurement, in millimetres, between the centres of your pupils. A correct PD ensures your prescription lenses are positioned precisely in front of your eyes, giving you clear, comfortable vision.

Why is PD Important?

  • Lens Accuracy: Ensures lenses are centred for sharp, distortion-free vision.
  • Comfort: Helps reduce eye strain, headaches, and fatigue.
  • Personal Fit: Essential for both prescription sunglasses and optical glasses.

How to Measure Your PD at Home

  1. Stand around 30cm (12 inches) from a mirror in good lighting.
  2. Hold a millimetre ruler against your forehead, just above your eyes.
  3. Close your right eye and align the “0” mark of the ruler with the centre of your left pupil.
  4. Without moving the ruler, close your left eye and open your right eye.
  5. Note the measurement directly over the centre of your right pupil.
💡 Tip: Repeat the measurement a few times for accuracy, or ask a friend to assist.
